Sliding forwards - The Run

The Recovery is most often described as the, against the drive directed, movement of the slide-seat/rower towards the front-stops /catch.

This is, especially for competitive rowing, not entirely right.

Actually the athlete is drawing the foot-stretcher active towards the body; this way the boat is moving underneath the rower in drive direction.

This mostly described as slide-control.

The slide-seat is not moving, as mostly expected, towards the front-stops, but the slides are moving underneath the slide-seat back to the starting position/catch.

This results in a usable extra run of the boat, if the turning-point is kept according the basic biomechanical rules described in: ‘Increasing the effectiveness of the rowing technique’ (Dr. Klaus Mattes, 1999); which means: a jerky stopping of the boat is to avoid by late, but smooth slowing down (of sliding) into a fluent direction-change of the motion at the turning-point.
